How Long Does Trademark Registration Take in China? Complete Timeline 2026

Current CNIPA Processing Times (2026)

CNIPA has made significant efficiency gains in recent years. The average total time from filing to registration is now 7-9 months for smooth applications, down from 12+ months in previous years.

Stage by Stage Timeline

Stage 1: Filing Receipt (2-4 weeks)

After your agent submits the application, CNIPA issues a formal filing receipt with an application number. This confirms the filing date — the official priority date for all subsequent proceedings.

Stage 2: Formal Examination (1-2 months)

CNIPA checks that all required documents are complete and properly formatted. If issues exist, a Notice of Correction is issued with a 15-day response deadline. Most straightforward applications pass formal examination without issues.

Stage 3: Substantive Examination (4-7 months)

The most critical stage. An examiner reviews the mark for distinctiveness, similarity to prior marks, and compliance with the Trademark Law. This is where most rejections occur.

If the examiner finds no issues, the mark proceeds directly to publication. If issues exist, an office action is issued.

Stage 4: Office Action Response (if applicable, +2-4 months)

If you receive an office action, the response takes 2-4 weeks to prepare, and CNIPA takes another 1-3 months to review and decide. This adds significant time to the process.

Stage 5: Publication / Opposition Period (3 months)

Approved marks are published in the Trademark Gazette. Any third party can file an opposition during this 3-month window. If an opposition is filed, the timeline extends by 12+ months while CNIPA adjudicates.

Stage 6: Registration Certificate (1-2 months)

After the opposition period closes without incident, CNIPA issues the electronic registration certificate. Paper certificates are available upon request.
